Take Shelter

Posted  January 6, 2012  by  Pete Simcoe

To say I had high expectations for this film is an understatement and it mostly did deliver on its promise to be a dark and unnerving journey into paranoia and fear from the point of view of Curtis, a quiet family man experiencing frightening dreams motivating him to take serious measures to protect his family whilst his friends and family watch with concern. It’s worth seeing this film for the subtle-yet-disturbing factor – don’t expect traditional frights as thankfully, it is not about that. Expect unnerving, expect forboding and expect a great performance from Michael Shannon.

The Secret In Their Eyes

Posted  October 21, 2011  by  Pete Simcoe

It’s not very often that a film straddles the thriller / romance genres without descending into predictable dross. In the case of “The Secret In Their Eyes” [otherwise known as "El Secreto de Sus Ojos"], Argentinian director Juan José Campanella knows how to present a story with a maturity and depth not seen all that often. Tron Legacy Review

Posted  June 4, 2011  by  Pete Simcoe

Tron Legacy is a film by Joseph Kosinski following the adventures of Sam Flynn, son of Flynn from the original 1982 film, who is accidentally digitised from the real world into a character within Tron’s world. Sam must rescue his father who has been kept prisoner within the computer network by Clu and his followers and defeat the might Tron himself. Although the review had received poor reviews from sources I often rely on such as Film 4, I was hoping that on this occasion they were wrong so I went along to see what all the lack of fuss was about.

Valhalla Rising Review

Posted  June 4, 2011  by  Pete Simcoe

Valhalla Rising is a curious, and sometimes confusing tale, of One-Eye, a mute warrior enslaved in a cage by Norse captors, and his journey into the darker side of existence. Not an easy film to watch as the violence is ramped up but so is the atmosphere, the beautiful camera work and effects as it was shot in the highlands of Scotland. In some ways this film could be seen as a vehicle for experimenting with digital effects and HD equipment but it still works and provides an intriguing couple of hours viewing leaving the viewer with many questions at the conclusion.
